Hollywood’s next Neill Blomkamp
While I wasn’t a huge fan of District 9, I admit Blomkamp has pushed the aesthetic of CG movies. No longer plastic-y & hyperreal, District 9 brought some much needed real grit to big budget CG films.
In his debut short, Fed Alvarez, takes the same style and places it in South America.
Definitely in the same league.. I think Neill’s early shorts had better cg… specifically in the physics & compositing. But for the budget you can’t critique what Fed Alvarez accomplished nor can you critique the results.
Let’s see what he does with the $30M he just got from Hollywood.
Now, if only, these super gritty, high-end CG films incorporated a good story, developed characters and plotlines that aren’t straight out of a video game. Some gritty emotional, intellectual depth to go with the gritty visuals.
